The History Of Massage

Massage can be an excellent way to relax and unwind and help address a variety of physical and emotional conditions.

Massage is arguably one of the oldest forms of therapy...

it stems from the simple human instinct "to rub better". The term massage itself comes from the Arabic word "mash" or "mass" which means, "to press softly". Today it can be defined as the application of external manipulations to body or face using hands or digits.

Massage works,

to varying degrees on the fleshy areas of the body, stimulating the elements therein. Commonly an oil or cream is used on the skin to create a suitable "slip" to allow smooth, flowing massage.

It was the Greek physician, Hippocrates,

who is one of the first recorded to have used massage therapeutically for treatment of illness and disease by stimulating blood flow and bodily function. Since then massage has had quite a colourful history with popular opinion changing periodically as to the nature of its therapeutic qualities and application.

Although today massage is still often associated with beauty and pampering,

many enlightened individuals also recognise its deep, therapeutic qualities. Massage is an excellent way to benefit the whole person while at the same time working on specific areas of concern if required. It helps alleviate tension, toxin accumulation and stimulates various physiological processes and promotes deep relaxation, self healing and a sense of well-being.

What can I expect from a first appointment?

The initial appointment involves a thorough consultation to help gather relevant information for health and security purposes. We provide treatments to reflect your particular needs and as such the treatment is carefully adapted to meet those needs. Treatment times can vary from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on treatment required. Aftercare advice is provided at the end of the appointment. Unlike some busy salons, we ensure suitable time is also allowed for after your treatment for you to continue to relax before continuing with your day.

During treatment,

only the area to be worked on is exposed. At all times any area that is not being worked upon will be kept covered by towels and/or a blanket. Respect for your dignity and privacy is of utmost importance.

Following and during an appointment,

you can expect to feel an immediate release of tension, especially on or around the area being worked. In fact, some people are surprised by just how much tension they were holding and the corresponding sense of deep relaxation following a treatment. The therapeutic benefits and wonderful feeling of relaxation can continue for some time after your appointment.
