Counselling and psychotherapy are very broad terms which can include a diverse range of services from simply “listening” to more reflective, analytical and deeper work.
A professionally trained therapist will tend to embody more of the latter, utilizing the application of psychological principles to help explore life on an emotional and reflective level, while retaining the essential elements of sensitivity, caring and effective listening.
Effective Counselling helps create an environment where an individual feels able to express himself or herself openly and in confidence, to discover new insight. The practitioner role is one of skilled facilitator enabling individuals to gain greater clarity and effect positive change for themselves.
A course of Counselling may enable you to gain greater insight and understanding to help overcome any perceived obstacles in a positive, constructive way.

In his own words...
One of my biggest strengths is my sense of humanity. This was something suggested to me by a former client when for a moment I paused during a session admitting I was stuck as to the best way forward. Initially perhaps not something to inspire potential clients! However, what was reflected back to me during and after that session, and what made this particular client feel comfortable enough to continue our work together, was my simple and sincere display of openness and honesty. It made her feel valued and understood and importantly helped remind us the expert in front of her was also a human being. This observation stays with me and captures a core value of my approach. Underlying all the training, techniques and experience, in my opinion, the biggest virtue I bring to a therapeutic relationship is the ability to connect with people on an equal level. I do not make any claims to have “the answer”; only we have this within ourselves. My role is to help you find those answers
As with most things in modern life, someone considering the services I provide will find themselves confronted with a sometimes bewildering array of choices and enticements. Despite some suggestions to the contrary, an individual is not simply a faulty machine in need of fixing or reprogramming. We are all first and foremost human beings, which, by nature, means we are all unique, often contradictory and confusing, yet ultimately naturally seek fulfilment, growth, comfort and peace. What is appropriate for one individual may not suit another, hence, a further core value within Forest Haven is a holistic, comprehensive approach to achieving very individual goals.
If anyone reading this perceives themselves as a machine in need of fixing, that’s fine. There are some practitioners who would agree with this and will be happy to provide a “fix”. If however, you are someone who understands and values your unique individuality and capacity for positive change and development, then Forest Haven may help you discover the way.
